Community Spirit - yeah, right

At the Community Council meeting held on Tuesday 5th 2005, the subject of the Community Newsletter was raised. A discussion took place regarding the outstanding payments for newsletter adverts, dating back to 2001.
There were adverts placed by The Castle Inn at a time when the previous Landlord Mr Tony Maytum owned the Pub. Tony had sadly passed away on New Years Eve 2004 and his funeral was to be held on Saturday 9th January 2005.
As a mark of respect to Tony, Councillor Davies proposed that the outstanding Ten Pounds be written off. This proposal was seconded by Councillor Calver.
To the absolute disgust and annoyance of Cllr Davies, Cllr Neads proposed an amendment that the debt be chased. He was of the opinion that even though Tony had recently passed away, his debt remained outstanding and that it should be recovered. This was received by Cllr Davies as being completely disgraceful, disrespectful and deeply uncompassionate.
In it's wisdom, the Council voted on the proposal and amendment and incredibly, the Council found in favour of the amendment and the majority voted for Cllr Neads' plan to ask the Castle Inn to pay the outstanding £10.....
Cllr Davies then left the chamber for the next item, to which he had declared an interest. Whilst waiting for the item to be discussed, Cllr Davies walked to the Castle Inn. During the time that Cllr Davies was absent from the chamber, two donors who wish to remain anonymous, gave Cllr Davies £10 and asked that he present it to the Council on his return to the chamber. The donors were appalled at the disgraceful attitude of Cllr Neads and could not understand his mentality.
On his return to the chamber, Cllr Davies did indeed present the £10 to the Chairman in front of the Councillors who had voted to pursue this matter.

There is a very important message in what happened on that night and many equally important questions to be asked.....
